Main Task: Mood Board

This is the Mood Board I created with the focus on the genre of Hip Hop/Rap. All the images involved in the Mood Board are things I felt associated with the genre. For example I included famous rappers such as Drake, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z, Tinchy Stryder and Tinie Tempah because they are iconic idols to the genre and the audience will straight away recognise who they are and what they do. I also added a model, gun, money and a microphone because these are all things that come to mind when thinking of the genre of Hip Hop/Rap.

Main Task: Profiling Audience

The Future Music Star: Kallum, 19 is a very passionate music fan and musician. He believes without music, there is no such thing as life and for this reason he believes he must listen to music everyday of his life. He is open to all genres but the genre he is appealed to and can relate to the most is Hip-Hop/Rap. He is always up to date with all of the charts and always tries to find new upcoming artists so he feels like he has knowledge. This influences his fashion trend. He now tends to wear baseball caps, long jackets, normal jeans, expensive trainers (top brands) and long chains to show off. It has also influenced his choice of friends as they also wear similiar clothing and share similar views on life and music. He has been involved in music since the age of 5 and is inspired to one day become a big musician. He has many rap icons/idols that he follows and is a big fan of but the music artist he adores the most is 50 cent. Growing up as a boy, he will make sure that he is the first person on Earth to get his hands on new released albums by the rapper. He's lyrical conent sounds very familiar to 50 cent aswell as his flow which has also engaged people to draw comparison of the two. He is currently in full time education in university studying music technology and considers becoming a music producer as an alternative to becoming a music star. He is a very sociable character and communicates very well with others and likes to work with anyone who can improve him as a musician and as a music fan. He also loves to read music magazines, mainly of the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap to get news on latest superstars and news in the music world.

Main Task: Audience Research

In order to gather useful information for my music magazine, I conducted a questionnaire in order to help me with my development.

These are 4 images of the audiences I had questioned out of 10.

Evaluation
Considering all the answers collected from the audience I had asked I had come to a useful and helpful conclusion to what my music magazine should look like and what should feature on it.

The majority of people suggested that the best name for my Hip-Hop music magazine would be 'Fame' and for this reason, that is what I will name my magazine.

I will also feature a price for my music magazine as I also got results on how much it should be sold at. Most people said '£1.00 - £1.50' and for this reason I will give it the cost of £1.25 as it is in between both prices (balancing it out fairly).

And lastly since my music magazine will be based on Hip-Hop I asked the audience whether they would like an element of other genres involved and the majority answered they would so that is another aspect to take in consideration.

Main Task: Double Spread Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Double Spread Textual Analysis

Denotation
The denotation of this print media is a double page spread, consisting of an image of a music artist in summer looking clothes. There also headings and quotations to the right of the subjuect which consist of black, blue and white which shows a range of different colours.

Character
This double spread shows a picture of a successful American rapper with the stage name of T.I.

Costume
The costume the artist is wearing in this image is a white T-shirt with a colourful checker shirt and pale trousers. The colourful colours on the checker shirt connotes fun, joy and summer which also helps to show a consistency to the heading of the double spread.

Props
The artist is wearing what appears to be chains around his neck. This connotes that he may be very interested in fashion or feels like he should look good in front of people. This also connotes that he may have money as he is wearing expensive chains.

NVC (Non Verbal Communication)
Judging by his body language, the artist has his arms out wide to represent wings or a plane. This connotes that as an artist he is aiming to fly to the top as any other artist but in a fun and positive way.

Headline
The headline of the double spread is 'SUMMER T.I.ME'. The term 'summer time' often springs up the thought of bright, hot days and fun. This connotes that the artist is going through a successful period in his career and has bright days ahead of him. Also the word time is spelt as 'T.I.ME' and this is to use the artists stage name in the word as it works and makes it seem like it is his time to shine.

Target Audience
The target audience for this type of double spread would be people who may consider their present or future times as bright or people who enjoy the genre of music the artist presents. I think the target audience age range would be from 12-28 and apply to both males and females. The reason for this is because the colours are quite catchy and may attract this sort of audience. Also the term 'Summer Time' is often used by this particular target audience as they often look forward to summer time and this could very well appeal to them.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

The denotation of this music magazine shows three famous artists associated with the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap.

Mise-en-scene

-Costume:
The men are wearing black suits whilst the women is wearing a black leather jacket. This gives the image or representation that they are powerful people in what they do and makes them look respected.

-Props:
The props used in the image are watches, rings and sun glassed. This could gives the represenation that they may be rich people or they have a high value to them and what they do. It could also represent that they are interested in fashion and care about looking good for the public.

-NVC (Non Verbal Communication):
Judging by the male Hip Hop/Rap artist in the front, he has got his arms crossed and this could represent that he is serious and controlling at what he does. The male artist behind him seems to look like he has a big a powerful impact in what he does and seems to also look serious at what he does. The woman at the back seems to be looking at the audience with her head tilted which could represent the difference in power from the male artists to female artists.

-Setting:
The background in which the picture was taken in black which may suggest that this was taken in a photo studio. The colour black may have been used to represent power and respect. It could have also been used to show a continuity in the use of colour (as they are all wearing black).

-Masthead:
The masthead is really simple but effective as it goes well with the lighting of the images and as it is a big name around the world, it is easy to recognize. The colour used for the masthead is white and this represent that the artists in the front cover are pure and fresh. This gives them a good look as it makes people think he is serious and tidy.

-Coverlines:
The main coverline "Diddy's commision" could represent that the artist P-Diddy has a duty to do whether it be in the music industry or elsewhere. The font used is Sans Serif font which connotes that it is modern and is also a simple font but gives an effective effect as it's not too fancy and goes with the meaning of the magazine well. There are also other coverlines with the names of other music artists. This connotes that they are open to a range of musicians that are related to their theme and genre. Also it will attract their target audience as they may feel very interested and want to read more on the artists name on the magazine.

-Target Audience:
Considering all these points, it's likely that the target audience would appeal to people (male and female, though more of a male audience than female) aged 16-25. The reason I believe this is because I believe that age range would have a good understanding of the Hip-Hop/Rap culture and can easily relate to the genre.

Main Task: Introduction

My name is Jeffrey Sabwisa, I am currently in Year 12 at Christ The King Sixth Form College and studying AS Media. In this project, I will be focusing on creating the front cover, contents page and double page spread of a Hip-Hop/Rap music magazine. I have chosen the 'Hip-Hop/Rap' genre because I enjoy listening to it and I believe I can do a good job creating a 'Hip-Hop/Rap' magazine. Throughout this process, I will also be doing some constructive planning & research so I have a good understanding on what I need to do in this project to make it a success. I am looking forward to the tasks I need to do in the planning and research, particularly doing a mood board and conventions diagram, because it will help me create my music magazine and help me develop new skills along the way.
