Main Task: Post-Production Feedback

In this section I will be talking about feedback I had got from the public on my music magazine pieces.

Front Cover

Strengths
The audience very much liked the lay out, design and colour scheme of my front cover and believed that it was really effective. To be more specific, they believe that the lay out and text of my front cover was simple but very effective and at a high quality standard (looking professional). They also felt that there was a lot of continuity on and it is not too busy. Furthermore they believe it looks like a Hip-Hop/Rap magazine which means the magazine has the right message across.
Weakness
I didn’t really receive a lot of constructive criticism, but one critic believes that the character on my front cover is covering the masthead. And another critic believes that the character looked separated from the background and could have been synced in better.

Contents Page

Strength
Judging from the audience, the contents page looked clear and everything that featured in the contents page was spaced well. Also they believe that it is unique and the choice of font is very classy and that the colour scheme is consistent from the front cover.
Weaknesses
For some the green colour should be changed to a colour around red. For some the green colour should maybe be a bit lighter as they feel it’s boring. And one critic believed that the colouring of the pictures above the editor’s note looked a bit odd.

This is an edit from one of the audience to show me what they would do to improve the contents page.

Double Page Spread

Strengths
According to the audience, the lay out is good and very engaging. Also the heading on the right hand side which reads ‘Hard work pays off!!!’ is really effective. They also believe the idea of the polaroid’s was really good and believe the black and white images with only the yellow designer logo in colour on the polaroid was very smart and effective. And lastly some believe that the stars used on the left hand side give the double spread a sense of balance and symmetry.
Weaknesses
There was not much constructive criticism given which indicates that there was not much error involved but some criticism given was that more questions could have been included. And another was that the sign that reads ‘Exclusive’ looks too small to see.

Conclusion
Overall judging by the response I received from the audience, I believe that my music magazine project was a success. But although I may feel happy with the work I produced, I still think I could have improved it some ways.

I believe that if I had to opportunity to do it again, I would have used another lay out for my contents page. The lay out I would use if is the third example of my mock up designs. The reason for this is because I believe that it would have been more engaging and looked more professional then the lay out I used on my current contents page design. I would have also tried to find different tutorials in order to enhance my creative skills even more and make my music magazine pieces look more unique in terms of style.

I would lastly try to add more questions on to my double spread since it seems limited.

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

Although I had originally planned to use this image on my double spread page, I felt it was only right to use it on the front cover of my music magazine. The reason behind it is because he gives strong eye contact towards the audience which is very engaging aswell as the lighting blending well with the image. It also suits my genre of Hip-Hop/Rap.

I have chosen this image to feature on my music magazine contents page because it is the same person on my front cover and is different from both of the other pictures too. It also has a good focus and lighting to it aswell.

I have chosen this image to feature on my music magazine contents page because it is a strong image which shows the person in the picture has power (judging by the camera angle), and I believe he suits the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap.

I have chosen this image to feature on my music magazine contents page because it is a strong image, and it I believe it suits my genre of Hip-Hop/Rap. The only concern is the lighting but that can always be fixed during the process of designing the contents page.

I have chosen this this image for my music magazine double spread page. The reason for this is because it is the same person from the front cover and he seems really focused in the activity he is doing which helps portray a passion to what he is doing which is engaging for the audience to see and the focus is also sharp and neat.

I will not be using this image because the lighting is very bad to the point u can't really see the person in the picture. As well as the lighting, the focus isn't perfect and will not be useful for my music magazine.

Main Task: Case Study of a Publishing House

Conde Nast publishes around 27 different magazines. Some of the magazines they publish up to date are the following (split up to different categories):

Fashion & Lifestyle
· Vogue
· W
· Glamour
· Allure
· Self
· Teen Vogue
· GQ
· Details
· Lucky
· Style.com
· Tatler
Home
· Architectural Digest
Bridal
· Brides
Sport
· GolfDigest
· GolfWorld
Food
· Bon Appétit
· Epicurious
· Gourmet Live
And many more…

Each magazine published has its own unique target audience. The reason for this is because if they publish magazines that only relate to one target audience, then it will only appeal to one audience whereas if they have many magazines that appeal to different target audiences, then they would have more consumers interested in their magazine products. It would also mean that they would be making more money publishing magazine covers for different target audiences because they have a bigger range of audiences.
Condé Nast is largely considered to be the originator of the “lifestyle magazines”, type of magazines focused on a particular class or interest instead of targeting the largest possible readership. Its magazines focus on a wide range of subjects, including travel, food, home, culture, and other interests, with fashion the larger portion of the company's focus. More recently, Condé Nast has expanded its offerings to include marketing services and consumer-focused products such as apps and licensed merchandise.

For example, the magazine ‘Vogue’ is a fashion magazine and is published by Cande Nast and from research conducted, it attracts 93% of women of an average age of 28 (in fact most readers who read the magazine are personal designers).

On the other hand, the magazine ‘GQ.com’ is also a fashion magazine published by Cande Nast and from research conducted on this magazine, 80% of men are drawn towards the magazine with the average age of 33.

This shows that they publish magazines to all different audiences which would be good because as I said earlier, it gives them more consumers which means more money in business sense.

I believe the Conde Nast publishing house should publish my magazine because it would increase their target audience and it is a bit different to the other magazines they publish which may help them gain more consumers in buying their magazines. I also believe that it would help promote the type of genre I am displaying and for this reason I believe it would be a good idea for them to publish my magazine.

Main Task: Mood Board

This is the Mood Board I created with the focus on the genre of Hip Hop/Rap. All the images involved in the Mood Board are things I felt associated with the genre. For example I included famous rappers such as Drake, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z, Tinchy Stryder and Tinie Tempah because they are iconic idols to the genre and the audience will straight away recognise who they are and what they do. I also added a model, gun, money and a microphone because these are all things that come to mind when thinking of the genre of Hip Hop/Rap.

Main Task: Profiling Audience

The Future Music Star: Kallum, 19 is a very passionate music fan and musician. He believes without music, there is no such thing as life and for this reason he believes he must listen to music everyday of his life. He is open to all genres but the genre he is appealed to and can relate to the most is Hip-Hop/Rap. He is always up to date with all of the charts and always tries to find new upcoming artists so he feels like he has knowledge. This influences his fashion trend. He now tends to wear baseball caps, long jackets, normal jeans, expensive trainers (top brands) and long chains to show off. It has also influenced his choice of friends as they also wear similiar clothing and share similar views on life and music. He has been involved in music since the age of 5 and is inspired to one day become a big musician. He has many rap icons/idols that he follows and is a big fan of but the music artist he adores the most is 50 cent. Growing up as a boy, he will make sure that he is the first person on Earth to get his hands on new released albums by the rapper. He's lyrical conent sounds very familiar to 50 cent aswell as his flow which has also engaged people to draw comparison of the two. He is currently in full time education in university studying music technology and considers becoming a music producer as an alternative to becoming a music star. He is a very sociable character and communicates very well with others and likes to work with anyone who can improve him as a musician and as a music fan. He also loves to read music magazines, mainly of the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap to get news on latest superstars and news in the music world.

Main Task: Audience Research

In order to gather useful information for my music magazine, I conducted a questionnaire in order to help me with my development.

These are 4 images of the audiences I had questioned out of 10.

Evaluation
Considering all the answers collected from the audience I had asked I had come to a useful and helpful conclusion to what my music magazine should look like and what should feature on it.

The majority of people suggested that the best name for my Hip-Hop music magazine would be 'Fame' and for this reason, that is what I will name my magazine.

I will also feature a price for my music magazine as I also got results on how much it should be sold at. Most people said '£1.00 - £1.50' and for this reason I will give it the cost of £1.25 as it is in between both prices (balancing it out fairly).

And lastly since my music magazine will be based on Hip-Hop I asked the audience whether they would like an element of other genres involved and the majority answered they would so that is another aspect to take in consideration.

Main Task: Double Spread Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Double Spread Textual Analysis

Denotation
The denotation of this print media is a double page spread, consisting of an image of a music artist in summer looking clothes. There also headings and quotations to the right of the subjuect which consist of black, blue and white which shows a range of different colours.

Character
This double spread shows a picture of a successful American rapper with the stage name of T.I.

Costume
The costume the artist is wearing in this image is a white T-shirt with a colourful checker shirt and pale trousers. The colourful colours on the checker shirt connotes fun, joy and summer which also helps to show a consistency to the heading of the double spread.

Props
The artist is wearing what appears to be chains around his neck. This connotes that he may be very interested in fashion or feels like he should look good in front of people. This also connotes that he may have money as he is wearing expensive chains.

NVC (Non Verbal Communication)
Judging by his body language, the artist has his arms out wide to represent wings or a plane. This connotes that as an artist he is aiming to fly to the top as any other artist but in a fun and positive way.

Headline
The headline of the double spread is 'SUMMER T.I.ME'. The term 'summer time' often springs up the thought of bright, hot days and fun. This connotes that the artist is going through a successful period in his career and has bright days ahead of him. Also the word time is spelt as 'T.I.ME' and this is to use the artists stage name in the word as it works and makes it seem like it is his time to shine.

Target Audience
The target audience for this type of double spread would be people who may consider their present or future times as bright or people who enjoy the genre of music the artist presents. I think the target audience age range would be from 12-28 and apply to both males and females. The reason for this is because the colours are quite catchy and may attract this sort of audience. Also the term 'Summer Time' is often used by this particular target audience as they often look forward to summer time and this could very well appeal to them.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

The denotation of this music magazine shows three famous artists associated with the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap.

Mise-en-scene

-Costume:
The men are wearing black suits whilst the women is wearing a black leather jacket. This gives the image or representation that they are powerful people in what they do and makes them look respected.

-Props:
The props used in the image are watches, rings and sun glassed. This could gives the represenation that they may be rich people or they have a high value to them and what they do. It could also represent that they are interested in fashion and care about looking good for the public.

-NVC (Non Verbal Communication):
Judging by the male Hip Hop/Rap artist in the front, he has got his arms crossed and this could represent that he is serious and controlling at what he does. The male artist behind him seems to look like he has a big a powerful impact in what he does and seems to also look serious at what he does. The woman at the back seems to be looking at the audience with her head tilted which could represent the difference in power from the male artists to female artists.

-Setting:
The background in which the picture was taken in black which may suggest that this was taken in a photo studio. The colour black may have been used to represent power and respect. It could have also been used to show a continuity in the use of colour (as they are all wearing black).

-Masthead:
The masthead is really simple but effective as it goes well with the lighting of the images and as it is a big name around the world, it is easy to recognize. The colour used for the masthead is white and this represent that the artists in the front cover are pure and fresh. This gives them a good look as it makes people think he is serious and tidy.

-Coverlines:
The main coverline "Diddy's commision" could represent that the artist P-Diddy has a duty to do whether it be in the music industry or elsewhere. The font used is Sans Serif font which connotes that it is modern and is also a simple font but gives an effective effect as it's not too fancy and goes with the meaning of the magazine well. There are also other coverlines with the names of other music artists. This connotes that they are open to a range of musicians that are related to their theme and genre. Also it will attract their target audience as they may feel very interested and want to read more on the artists name on the magazine.

-Target Audience:
Considering all these points, it's likely that the target audience would appeal to people (male and female, though more of a male audience than female) aged 16-25. The reason I believe this is because I believe that age range would have a good understanding of the Hip-Hop/Rap culture and can easily relate to the genre.

Main Task: Introduction

My name is Jeffrey Sabwisa, I am currently in Year 12 at Christ The King Sixth Form College and studying AS Media. In this project, I will be focusing on creating the front cover, contents page and double page spread of a Hip-Hop/Rap music magazine. I have chosen the 'Hip-Hop/Rap' genre because I enjoy listening to it and I believe I can do a good job creating a 'Hip-Hop/Rap' magazine. Throughout this process, I will also be doing some constructive planning & research so I have a good understanding on what I need to do in this project to make it a success. I am looking forward to the tasks I need to do in the planning and research, particularly doing a mood board and conventions diagram, because it will help me create my music magazine and help me develop new skills along the way.

Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

The denotation of this magazine shows a young boy ready to work in a happy environment. The connotation of the magazine represents work, happiness, education and friendliness judging by the atmosphere of the image.

The boy in the magazine is wearing casual clothing which could represent he is just a normal boy like everyone and this could attract people of roughly the same age as the boy in the image as they could be thinking, "This appeals to me".

The props that are used in the magazine are a pencil and books. This shows he is ready to work and is well organised and equipt to learn.

The lighting used in the magazine seems bright. This could represent the boy has a bright future ahead of him through education. It could also represent that education is the path to success and this could encourage people to pick up the magazine and find out more.

The setting in this magazine shows that the boy is in a classroom learning. This helps the audience understand what he is doing and also suits the idea of the message trying to be put across.

The NVC (Non Verbal Communication) of the boy shows that he is friendly and seems to be enjoying life at school. It also shows that he is ready to learn and seems to be welcoming.

The anchorage of the words in the magazine help to support the message of the poster by giving it the effect of a friendly, bright and playful image judging by the shape, size and colour. It is not hard to read. This gives it more meaning to the picture of the magazine and suits the purpose of the magazine as well.

The Masthead of the magazine is very simple but effective since it gives it a friendly and gentle effect to the magazine. This also helps adults to pick up the book and take it serious as it's not too childish.

The main image in the magazine is the image of the boy smiling since it brings a sense of happiness and also shows that he is in a working environment which helps the purpose of the magazine.

And lastly, the fact that the magazine is free will helps to attract its audience even more than usual as they won't need to pay anything to take a look at the magazine and could also help the magazine to grow recognision to grow.

Induction: Movie poster Texture Analysis

This is a Movie poster for 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull'.

The poster shows a man with a dominant stance with his fist clinched which could represent him being strong, dominant and powerful. He is also looking straight at the camera which gives the audience feel he won't be a easy one to knock down or defeat.

The costume he is wearing looks worn out and dirty which could defend the point that he is an adventurous person. It also makes him look old fashioned as this type of outfit is not commonly worn in todays morden society.

The prop he is holding on him is a whip and and this could represent that he is ready for battle or a fight and it could also represent that he holds power and authority.

The lighting in the movie poster is yellow/orange, which could represent a that the movie will be epic and adventurous.

Induction: Re-creation of a Movie Magazine Front Cover

This is my re-creation of a Movie Magazine Front Cover. Although I may not be a Photoshop wizard, I have a basic understanding on how to create images, edit or change images and I have a basic understanding on the tools provided on Photoshop.

I believe I managed to get the basic and most important part of the magazine done but as I was limited on time, I couldn't be able to apply the finishing touches to it.

I believe if I had more time on re-creating the Movie Magazine Front Cover, I believe I would have had the chance to make it look even closer to the image and also apply finishing touches to the image.
